THE GREAT CLOUD OF WITNESSES
Reading: Hebrews 12v1-4 & 12-13
Come with me to Stratford, London. Go back in time to 2012 – The Olympic Games.
Come with me – not into the spectators’ stands to sit down – but onto the athletics track to run the race of life.
These verses looked at in the context of this illustration – an illustration very familiar to the Hebrew Christians.
Consider us as the athletes and the cloud of witnesses as the enthusiastic spectators.
Careful of not stretching the illustration too far.
Ask ourselves – Who were these witnesses referred to as a Great Cloud?
Ch.11 Lists some of them – well known names of leaders from he OT.
There are many others – never named in scripture – a great multitude of believers down through the ages.
Collectively they’ve experienced all that life can bring to humanity.
Witnesses to us alive today, that we might benefit from their experience and testimony, whether recorded in scripture or a silent testimony of “ordinary” Christian people.
1Cor10v11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.
