GOD IS NOT FAR FROM US
He did this so that they would look for him, and perhaps find him as they felt around for him. Yet God is actually not far from any one of us. Acts 17v27 GNB
If we would draw nearer to God we need to understand that He is close to us already. We don’t have to travel vast distances over land or sea, or through the air, to reach God. We don’t have to do great acts of goodness or penance. We have no need to go to a particular religious location or to a special building to find God.
God truly is not far from anyone who will take the time and trouble to seek Him in the depths of their innermost being. The words of the Bible version above use the phrase “felt around for Him”. The Greek word can be so translated or equally translated “grope for”. Feeling indicates touching rather than seeing or hearing by physical senses.
So how can we grope or feel with our inner senses to draw closer to God? This is no spasmodic activity, perhaps when we have nothing else to do. No, it’s a continuous activity, a craving, an all-consuming desire. Although we cannot see Him with our eyes, or hear Him with our ears; we can reach out towards Him and when we do this in all earnestness, we will discover He is very close to us already. There will be that spiritual contact (spiritual touch) which brings the presence of God right into our hearts, into our inner consciousness, into the very air we breathe.
We are told in 1Corinthians 3v16 that Christians are God’s temple and the Holy Spirit dwells within us. That’s how close God is to you and to me! But we need to take this as an actual fact; to truly believe it in our hearts and feel it in our innermost being. Then His inner presence will be actually experienced in our minds and emotions so that His presence directs and controls our lives, our feelings and most importantly our motives.
Christian: when you feel alone, desolate, abandoned, confused, sorrowful, bereft, even maybe held in the grip of some sin – know this: God has not abandoned you! Indeed, He is not far from you; He is only a hand stretch away. Reach out with your innermost being, stretch right through your confusions and doubts. He is there to be discovered afresh and become your Helper, your encourager, your strength, and your all-sufficiency.
As the hart pants after the water brooks, so my soul pants after You, O God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; Psalm 42v1-2.
How greatly do you thirst for the deeper presence of God in your life? Is it to the point that your very life depends on finding that Water of Life – that deep relationship with the Living God? Without water any living creature will die. With a deeper presence of God in your heart, in your innermost being, you will find new life, an abundant refreshing spiritual life, and a fresh new experience of walking with God.
